New RV or Used RV: Which one is better?

New RVs and used RVs both have their place for RVers.  But when you’re just starting out, it is more practical to buy used RV. Used RV is a lot cheaper than new RVs.  Moreover, don’t ever think you’re not going to run into some mechanical issues if you’re buying a new RV.

So if it’s your first, and your goal is to try out and have some adventure we recommend that you simply buy a second-hand RV from a good car dealership. Here is a complete guide whether you should buy an  new RV or used RV.

Pros of Buying a New RV

    • Manufacturer’s warranty – a new RV comes with a manufacturer’s warranty. This means that you can still return it if there is any factory defect. Mechanical repairs and defects will also be covered for the first time.
    • No previous owner – You will be the first to use it. The cushions are still very new, with cover, and without any odd smell.
    • Get the exact RV you want – If you’ve been eyeing on a new RV model, buying a brand new will give you the RV of your dream. You don’t just settle. As long as you have a good budget, you can definitely have it.

Cons of Buying a New RV

    • Premium price – A new RV could be very expensive. Apparently, all the parts (including interior and exterior) are brand new.
    • High depreciation – Your RV is going to depreciate in about 2-5 years from the time you buy it. This is a sad reality for almost all RV owners.
    • Need to work out kinks/issues – It may take a while before you get used to your new RV. Since it’s new, you wouldn’t have previous reference of its issues and you may have to deal with them for the first time.
    • Higher insurance costs – a new RV will require payment for insurance premium. It is best that you get comprehensive coverage to ensure you’re financially secured throughout your travel.

Pros of Buying a Used RV

    • Lower price – Used RVs are practically more affordable than new ones. A lot of people are fortunate enough to find used RVs that are in very good condition and layout according to their liking.
    • Lower insurance costs – Obviously, insurance cost for used RVs are lower than new ones. If you’re on tight budget but still want to enjoy a good adventure, you will definitely like a used RV.
    • Less depreciation – Second hand RVs don’t depreciate fast.
    • Kinks/issues worked out (possibly) – While many say that used RVs usually have issues but at least this time, you know they are already fixed. Used RVs are sold in good conditions and usually with good repairs already. At least this time, you know what the issues are and you can prepare for them in case they arise.
    • Option for private sale and extended warranties from third parties – You can resell it later on if you decide to stop RVing. The best thing is that, you can buy RV extended warranty from third party provider.

Cons of Buying a Used RV

    • Previous owner(s) – The previous owner might not be as hygienic as you are, and you would find some RVs with bad smell or bad interior. Eventually, you would need to have it worked out, which will shed some dollars from your pocket considering the work that needs to be done.
    • Higher potential for hidden issues – There could be hidden issues with the engines and other stuff inside.
    • Limited selection – You can’t find latest models of RVs in the dealership. Hence, you would have to settle with older ones.
